Why Millet Momos Are the Smarter Street Food Choice

By the Good Momo Co. team · 28 May 2026 · 5 min read

Momos are the snack the whole country agrees on. They turn up at college gates, office lanes, mall food courts and late-night carts. But for all that love, the everyday momo has a quiet problem, it's almost always wrapped in refined maida. At Good Momo Co., we thought India's favourite street food deserved a better base.

The problem hiding in the wrapper

Maida is wheat stripped of its bran and germ. The milling that makes it soft and white also removes most of its fibre and minerals, leaving a fast-digesting starch. It tastes fine, but it doesn't give your body much to work with, and when it's deep-fried, the snack tips further from "everyday food" to "once-in-a-while treat."

What changes with whole millet

We wrap every momo in 100% whole-millet dough instead. Millets, finger millet (ragi), pearl millet (bajra), foxtail and more, keep their bran and germ, so the wrapper carries fibre, minerals and a gentler release of energy. They're also naturally gluten-free, which matters if you're sensitive to gluten or simply trying to eat lighter.

We dug into the science behind each of these claims on the Why Good Momo Co. section of our site, and compared millet to maida point by point in Maida vs Millet.

Steamed, never fried

The grain is only half the story. We steam every parcel rather than frying it, which keeps the filling moist and the calories honest. We unpack exactly why that matters in Steamed, Not Fried.

Better street food shouldn't mean boring street food. It should taste like the snack you already love, just made with more care.

Taste isn't the trade-off

Here's the part people don't expect: the ragi shell turns out nutty and satisfying, and it stands up beautifully to bold fillings. From classic veg to smoky paneer and lean chicken, there's a flavour for every plate on our menu. Guilt-free, it turns out, can also be the tastier choice.
